Artwork on the Road

Art on the Road - November 2018 - March 2020

In the summer of 2018 I made the decision to pare down possessions by selling, donating, and giving away as much as possible and putting the remainder of what I kept in a 5 x 10 x 8 storage unit. I moved out of my apartment at the end of October and on November 12 headed off on a journey to join countless other traveling nomads in the world.

Since my departure from Massachusetts  (in the United States) in November 2018, I have traveled to: France, India, Indonesia, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Bulgaria, and the traveling continues over a year later. I have made many new friends, enjoyed conversations and experiences with new acquaintances, chanted, listened to music, danced, been of service, eaten countless meals, offered assistance or liaised others, and continued to make countless new connections (some only in a moment or two, others that will be lifelong).

The majority of my artwork until I became a nomad had been created with pastel chalks or collages done the old fashioned way, by cutting and pasting images. Pastel chalks are too messy for traveling and creating collages requires lots of images, again not a travel friendly art form. As a result, I've moved beyond my comfort zone and now carry with me: colored pencils, a small sketch notebook, wax pastels, a larger painting notebook, a water brush, and fine-tipped colored pens. The majority of my artwork is done listening to mantra music, chanting along to recorded mantra music, or drawing while live music is happening (like Amma chanting bhajans or live kirtan taking place). All of my artwork is intuitive, meaning that I don't have a vision or plan of what I will create until it is underway or nearly completed or completed. Occasionally a piece may be intentionally done, but even those pieces are intuitive as I allow myself to be drawn to a color or a technique - when I am immersed in the creation of art I am fully present in that creation, not thinking, just being and open to where I am taken during the process of creating.

I am perpetually grateful to the universe for enabling me to take this time to travel, create, and just 'BE.' I owe debts of gratitude to all my friends who supported this move and continue to support me in their own ways. I thank every one of my friends who has lodged me, fed me, offered me transportation, shared meals with me, given me advice and recommendations, engaged me in thoughtful and heartfelt conversations, and who continue to stay in touch through various electronic methods. And to the all the wonderful souls I have encountered and continue to meet along the way who may just smile or assist me in more concrete ways, thank you to you too. May every soul in my life be blessed with joy, laughter, compassion, and above all love. How truly blessed I am.  May I continue to share what I can with those less fortunate than I in this world and may I bring corners of joy to the world as I continue on my journey. Peace to All, Light to All, Love to All.

My heart is excessively full thanks to many amazing musicians whose music is with me each and every day and which not only is played or listened to when I create my artwork, but it keeps me uplifted during long bus and train rides whereever I am traveling. I'm especially grateful to the following musicians in no particular order: Carrie Grossman, The Mayapuris, Brenda McMorrow, The Hanumen, Shantala, Krishna Das, Jai Uttal, David Newman, Deva Premal & Mitten & Manose, Benjy Wertheimer, Dave Stringer, Adam Bauer, Bada Haridas Prabu, Kirtan Soul Revival, John de Kadt, Gauravani Buchwald, Visvambhar Sheth, Ricky Byars (and the Agape Choir), Mirabai Ceiba, Aykanna, Snatam Kaur, Ajeet, Jai Jagdeesh, Simrit, Krishna Kaur, Andi Flax, GuruGanesha, Gurunam Singh, and a many others but these are my core playlist musicians.
